An 'opening' thought : since winter is approaching I can say that when this lamp illuminates freshly fallen SNOW it makes the entire area around it absolutely GLOW.
It's magical ! Now, the other info, below NO - the bow is not fastened to the lantern - it's just an inspiration for someone who might consider this is a Christmas gift for another ! A Japanese garden lantern looks perfect in almost any garden setting - and not just an Asian-themed garden.
It is constructed of aluminum and all-weather - no possible cracking of stone, no rusting of iron or tin, no breakage of cheap plastic ones.
Due to its ‘pebbled’ light gray finish it shows virtually no weathering degradation.
The roof is 20" wide, the bulb housing is 17" wide, and the spread of the legs is 13".
First two photos were shot in full daylight/sunlight, the third was in the semi-dark of dusk in order to show it illuminated.
NOTE - the darker grid-like lines in the second photo are ‘not really there’ - they are simply shadows cast on the top piece due to its proximity to an cage-like obelisk which cast a shadow pattern in the late day sun.
The third photo, taken at dusk when the sun was down, shows no such shadow.
It is an electrical device, with an included 6’, outdoor cord with a three-pronged plug.
One standard socket-size light bulb creates the illumination.
We have a ‘cool white’ bulb in it now but one could also use a ‘warm white’ bulb’, or any other colored bulb for a special theme or occasion.
The hexagonal top lifts off to access the bulb for replacement; the other part of the lantern is a unitary piece.
Some lanterns have an open housing for a light bulb - the downside of that is that the bulb is visible - not desired.
Our lantern has translucent screening over the ‘windows’ in the bulb enclosure which creates a much softer light in the lantern’s immediate area.
As a matter of fact, this lantern throws enough light in an approximately 8-10’ area around it to allow it to function in the area around an entry door or it could throw light on a nearby garden ornament or favorite tree or shrub.
If your home happens to have an indoor lower-level garden space, as occasionally found in split-level homes with such a open lower level on the back side of the house, this would look 'smashing' in such an 'indoor garden' space.
We operate our lantern with an outdoor timer between the lantern’s cord and the power plug.
That timer can be set for multiple on/off and duration times so that will operate only when you want it to.
Those timers are available in any hardware store.
