This is what the professionals use to protect trees without the cost and labor of having to put up a wire fence around trees.
Tree tubes will protect young trees and tree seedlings from deer and voles.
Trees will grow in the tube, once they make it to the top of the tube they are too tall for deer to damage.
Voles will damage young tree bark at the base of the tree, girdling the tree and causing permanent damage
Periodical cicada's will emerge in May, laying their eggs on tree seedling stems.
The larvae will tunnel out and the tree will likely die.
The cicada prefers to lay eggs in branches/stems that are in between a pencil and sharpie marker diameter.
This means any tree seedlings planted this year will likely die from cicada damage.
This year we will see 2 broods of cicada's emerge, this hasn't happened since 2011 and damage will be widespread, causing an estimated 75% mortality in tree seedlings planted in spring of 2024.
These tree tubes will protect tree seedlings from deer, voles and cicadas.
When the tree reaches the top of the tube, 1 to 2 years, you simply remove the tube and stake.
This is way cheaper and easier to manage than putting a wire fence around trees.
