There are many makers who call their wares “crystal”.
Some are genuine Lead Crystal but most are mere glass.
There is a difference.
Lead Crystal was Invented by the Englishman George Ravenscroft in 1674.
The lead in the glass reduces the melting temperature, increases the weight of glass and creates a beautiful clear finish.
Being denser it refracts (bends) light more than other glasses so it sparkles better.
And no, the lead in the process poses no danger to those in its presence or who use it for liquids [ or maybe even as a gorgeous flower vase ! ].
True Lead Crystal is heavier than glass or non-lead crystal - heavier in the 'heft' sense of the word, NOT too heavy to carry.
Sometimes the "cuts" in cheaper "crystal" are too numerous and create a gaudy, overdone effect.
Val St.
Lambert does just enough of such delicate artistry to provide the shimmer and excitement without venturing into the "too much" realm.
Val St.
Lambert is a Belgian firm founded in 1826 and known for its fine, high-end wares.
A SEARCH FOR “Val St.
Lambert Crystal Decanter” will show you the high values attributed to their crystal.
The crystal was gifted to us many years ago by a supplier in the 1970s; it is no longer offered by Val.
*** Contents of decanter, of course, are not included !
Our price, at $ 38, is certainly a bargain relative to similar, famed-brand new pieces.
